Liam Payne suggested in a new interview that OneDirection has been talking about doing something for their 10th anniversary, which is in July, and now fans think they’ve spotted another reason to be hopeful for a reunion.
Several 1D followers have noticed that Liam, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have all started following their former bandmate Zayn Malik on social media. Although Zayn isn’t following them back, the fans are taking that as a sign to have hope and many are getting pretty excited.
“They all followed Zayn again holy s - -t,” one person shared, while another added, “Zayn is no longer an ex member on Google [search].”
- And sources say the band is indeed planning something for the summer, but the coronavirus may cause some issues. "The members of One Direction are planning on doing something for their 10-year anniversary in July, but haven’t confirmed what that is yet,” a source tells Entertainment Tonight. “The guys started talking more frequently recently and have worked on putting a lot of things behind them.” The site adds, "With the outbreak of COVID-19, the guys living all over the world and with different management and labels, it’s hard to solidify what their reunion will be, but the guys want to do something for their fans."
- Meanwhile, insiders tell the New York Postthey are looking into a variety of things to do for the anniversary, including reuniting for a TV special, a new single and possibly even a tour. "There’s still a long way to go and a lot of hurdles," a source notes. “But there’s a lot of goodwill between them now and they want to make something happen.”
While music fans are really hoping they’ll get to see their favorite artists live again by the summer, one expert suggests that even if we start coming out of quarantine soon, live concerts, sporting events and other major public gatherings can’t happen for a long time.
Zeke Emmanuel, director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, was part of an expert panel gathered by the “New York Times” to discuss life after COVID-19, and he doesn’t think such big events could resume until “fall 2021 at the earliest."
“You can’t just flip a switch and open the whole of society up,” he says. “It’s just not going to work. It’s too much. The virus will definitely flare back to the worst levels.”
He believes “restarting the economy has to be done in stages,” explaining, “larger gatherings — conferences, concerts, sporting events — when people say they’re going to reschedule this conference or graduation event for October 2020, I have no idea how they think that’s a plausible possibility.” He adds, “I think those things will be the last to return.”
