John Mayer sat down with his close friend Andy Cohen on the host's SiriusXM channel, Radio Andy, to chat about how they met, the Grateful Dead and celebrities Mayer has never interacted with.
In the midst of gushing over pop superstar Shawn Mendes, who the 41-year-old crooner says has "got what it takes to go all the way," Mayer decided to give the press a "clickbait story."
"This is a story that's designed for people to pick up, put in press and put in a headline. And the headline is, ‘How Shawn Mendes’ underwear ended up in John Mayer’s hotel room.’"
The duo were working on "Like to Be You" off Mendes' 2018 self-titled album, when the young star remembered that he didn't have any more underwear. "Shawn says to me, ‘Hey man, do you think you could Postmates underwear? Can I Postmates underwear? I’m out of underwear," Mayer recalled. "I said, ‘You don’t have to Post mates underwear, I’ll get you underwear.' So I had my assistant go out and get Shawn Mendes underwear. He’s a size medium, by the way."
"So my assistant goes out and buys him a bag full of medium-sized boxer briefs. Not Calvin Klein, by the way, this was before that deal. We finish the song, he leaves the studio and doesn’t take the underwear with him." Mayer then kept Mendes' underwear for a while to return to him, but never had a chance to.
