Twenty One Pilots frontman Tyler Joseph spoke with Apple Music's Beats 1 for his first interview since the duo announced their new album, Trench.
During the 35-minute conversation, Joseph touched on a variety of different topics, including the concept behind Trench, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2015's record-breaking Blurryface. As he explains it, while Blurryface was based around its titular character, Trench is based on an entire world that Joseph created.
Joseph began creating the world the night of TOP's final Blurryface show in June 2017, and, as he says, it "consumed" him.
"It was all I could think about," he says. "I know every aspect of this world. I know what the weather is like in this world. And I wanted to go there, and write from that place."
Also in the interview, Joseph discusses the inspiration behind TOP's hit single "Heathens," his faith, and his relationship with his wife. He also reveals he grew a scraggly beard while hiding out in his studio as he created Trench.
Trench, which features the lead single "Jumpsuit," will be released October 5. Twenty One Pilots will launch a U.S. tour behind the album October 16 in Nashville.
