2News anchor, Mark Allan is a huge movie buff and each year he sends me his Oscar predictions. The 92nd Annual Academy Awards are this Sunday, February 9th. Let's see ho well Mark does this year. (By the way...he has scored 100% in the past.)
Happy Movie Watching!

Here are Mark Allan's 2020 Academy Awards Predictions:
Best Supporting Actor
—Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes
—Al Pacino, The Irishman
—Joe Pesci, The Irishman
—Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
—Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
As usual this category is stacked. I think Pacino and Pesci cancel each other out for being in the same film. 4 of these 5 have already won an Oscar with the exception of Pitt. The Academy fixes that this year. He wins a well deserved first. And he makes 56 look good!
Best Supporting Actress
—Kathy Bates, Richard Jewel
—Laura Dern, Marriage Story
—Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
—Florence Pugh, Little Women
—Margot Robbie, Bombshell
Big year for Johansson with two acting noms. I really liked Pugh a lot but the Oscar goes to Dern. It will be her first after a stellar career and the Academy loves the children of Hollywood royalty (Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd).
Best Actor
—Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory
—Adam Driver, Marriage Story
—Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
—Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes
—Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
If there is a slam dunk this year, this is it. Phoenix wins it. Can't wait for the acceptance speech!
Best Actress
—Cynthia Erivo, Harriet
—Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
—Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
—Renée Zellweger, Judy
—Charlize Theron, Bombshell
Here is Johansson again, and it was impressive to see Theron become Megyn Kelly before our very eyes. And the amazing Ronan picks her 4th nom already at age 25! But Zellweger wins. Hollywood loves it when you pay homage to its legends.
Best Picture
—Ford v Ferrari
—The Irishman
—Jojo Rabbit
—Joker
—Little Women
—Marriage Story
—1917
—Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
—Parasite
Jojo was my favorite film of the year... different, creative, funny, sad, and impossible to label. Parasite was a wild ass ride with a major plot twist halfway thru. I almost picked it to win here but a foreign language film has never won Best Pic and it is a lock for Best International (the old Best Foreign Film). Little Women was absolutely great, my second fave of the year. Which brings us to The Irishman. It has the big-name director and cast but sweet Jesus, three and a half hours! Note to Scorsese: just because you shot it doesn't mean it has to make the final cut! it was also primarily a Netflix release and I don't see the Academy awarding a film that kept audiences OUT of theaters. So my pick to win is the stirring World War 1 epic 1917. The way it was seemingly shot in one continuous take will likely also hand a Best Director nod to Mendes. Enjoy the show!
