Last week, an 82-year-old woman from Oregon was found alive after getting lost in the woods during an evening walk with her dog. Karen Joyce Davis had been hiking through rough, heavily wooded terrain with her blue heeler cattle dog, Cami, when she lost her way and couldn’t get back home. A search began after she was reported missing.
That night, about an hour and a half after deputies asked for help, search teams located Davis. Authorities say Cami stayed beside her in near-freezing temperatures, helping keep her warm and barking to alert rescuers, something the dog rarely does. A volunteer reports that the barking could be heard from hundreds of yards away and led teams straight to her location.
Volunteers treated Davis at the scene for hypothermia before carrying her to an ambulance. She was taken to a hospital for further care. Officials credit the coordinated rescue effort and the loyalty of her dog with helping bring her home safely.
