Memphis Police Officers Hurt During Unrest After Officer-Involved Shooting

Two dozen police officers were injured during a tense standoff with residents in Memphis, Tennessee following a police-involved shooting on Wednesday (June 12) evening. The suspect, who has been identified as 20-year-old Brandon Webber, was shot and killed by U.S. Marshals who were trying to take him into custody on numerous warrants.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says that Webber rammed his vehicle into the officers' cars numerous times before exiting with a weapon. Deputies opened fire and killed him. None of the officers were injured.

After the shooting, a large crowd of people began to gather at a nearby convenience store. Some people in the crowd started to throw objects at the officers, and at one point gunshots were reported in the area. The unruly crowd began to vandalize cars and buildings as the police fired tear gas and used riots shields to try to bring the situation under control. The crowd began to disperse around 10 p.m.

At least 24 officers were injured, and six of them required hospitalization, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said. Two journalists were also injured. It is unclear anybody was arrested or if any people in the crowd were hurt.

"As I monitored tonight's fatal shooting involving the US Marshal's, I was proud of our first responders. I'm impressed by their professionalism and incredible restraint as they endured concrete rocks being thrown at them and people spitting at them," Strickland wrote on Facebook.
