Shots Fired: Justin Bieber Contests Shawn Mendes' Prince Of Pop Title

Justin Bieber had something to say about Shawn Mendes' pop star status.

On Sunday (April 7), the "Lost in Japan" singer posted an image of the April 7 issue of The Observer magazine, on which Mendes features as cover boy, who acknowledged the 20-year-old global phenom as the Prince of Pop. However, the designation could just as easily be contested by the likes of Drake or The Weeknd — and of course, The Biebs. Noticing this, as his pop star predecessor, Bieber begged to differ and invited his younger Canadian counterpart to hit the ice for the coveted title once and for all.

"Hmm " Gonna have to break a few more records to dethrone my title there bud (canadian voice)..but if you want we can play hockey for it but i heard your a real bender on the ice we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it," the "Sorry" musician commented on the post.

And sure enough, Mendes answered the call: "LOL any time any day you just let me know!!!!!!"

See the exchange below.

But if we're talking number-one singles and albums, Bieber has him beat with five No. 1 singles and six chart-topping albums. Rest assured, Beliebers and Mendes Army, these guys are bros in real life.

"There is no competition and it was a playful joke people relax," Bieber clarified. "There’s no sides we’re all just here to make dope music. I’m just competitive as is he so it was just a little playful jargon."

This isn't the first time the crooners have been linked in competition… at least when it comes to winning the affection of Hailey Baldwin, now Bieber's wife. The "In My Blood" star was alleged to be romantically involved with Bieber's ex when they went as each other's date at the 2018 Met Ball.
