Sam Smith Admits To Getting Liposuction When He Was 12

Sam Smith is speaking his truth.

During a very candid interview with Jameela Jamil, the 26-year-old singer opened up about his early struggles with insecurity, detailing how he got liposuction before he was even a teenager to deal with his weight issues.

"I had liposuction, I was 12 years old," he told Jameela on Friday’s episode of her Instagram series "I Weigh Interviews."

"At the time I think I was very happy about it," Sam admitted. "It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal."

Also in the 30-minute interview, the "Dancing With A Stranger" singer spoke about his gender identity, saying he doesn't see himself as either male or female. "You do not identify in a gender. You are just you…you are your own special creation. That is how I take it. I am not male or female," he explained. "I think I float somewhere in between — somewhat on the spectrum." Adding, "I do think like a woman in my head at times. I've sometimes sat there and questioned, 'do I want a sex change?' It’s something I still think about, but I don't think it is."

Sam later shared a post on Instagram thanking Jameela and her team for the opportunity to speak his truth, which he called a life-changing experience. "A few months ago, I sat down with @jameelajamilofficial and spoke with her for her incredible @i_weigh movement. I know this sounds dramatic but this interview completely changed my life," he wrote. "Being able to talk so openly about my body issues and feeling so safe whilst doing it was truly liberating. I am so thankful to Jameela and her team for this opportunity and being so respectful and kind to me. It took a lot for me to do this and I was so nervous, so please be kind haha. I really hope this can make someone else who feels like me, a little less lonely and a little less alien xx."
