When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:
We are the leader in the fight against suicide. We fund research, create and administer educational programs that are based in science, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss and those who struggle with mental illness. Led by CEO Robert Gebbia and headquarted in New York, AFSP has 87 local chapters nationwide, hosting events and trainings to reduce the loss of lives by suicide and create communities that are having informed conversations about mental health.
Why We Walk:
Every year suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, and yet suicide prevention doesn't get anywhere near the funding given to other leading causes of death. It's up to Walkers like us to make a difference. Together we can change the conversation about mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life.
