Relay for Life of Miamisburg/West Carrollton

Relay for Life of Miamisburg/West Carrollton

Relay For Life is a community event where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer.  Corporate employees, friends, church groups, and neighbors join together in teams and take turns walking or running on a track throughout this overnight event.  This event is not a race, therefore participants may casually walk or run at whatever pace they are comfortable.  Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event—because cancer never sleeps.

Relay teams of 8-15 people camp out on the surrounding grounds and enjoy music, dancing, games and picnics.  There is entertainment and fun for people of all ages!  The Relay also creates a unique sense of a community of people fighting for a common cause – to cure cancer!

Before we begin walking at the Relay For Life, team members, survivors, families and friends assemble at the track.  Inspirational speakers then remind everyone of the reason for this event: finding a cure for cancer and honoring those who have battled the disease.

The Survivors Kickoff the event by walking the first lap around the track.  No survivor walks alone; they walk together offering support, camaraderie and hope.  The Survivors’ Walk is very emotional time for everyone at the Relay.  As the survivors walk their lap, participants, family members and friends line the track and cheer them on. During the Relay For Life, cancer survivors are invited to a reception held in their honor following the first lap.

Cancer touches so many people.  In order to remember those who we have lost and honor those who are courageously battling cancer, we light luminaria at dusk.  Individuals donate $10 to place luminaria around the track.  Each luminaria is inscribed with the name of the person to be honored or remembered.  When the sun goes down, the luminaria are lit.  To all present it is a very special time.  The luminarias light the track for the rest of the evening
